Creating a 4 part bun - first practical

The Fundamentals of Hair and Postiche

Tuesday 29th September

On this day, we had our first practical lesson in hair design. I was a little nervous about the hair classes as I prefer doing makeup and I have never done hair before but a part of me was really excited to learn and try out new styles.

The class started with our tutor demonstrating on a manikin head some different hairstyles that included; a 4 part bun, a twist bun, a plait bun, french braid and a fish plait.

We watched our tutor do a demonstration on all of these designs on a manikin head, she carefully explained all the steps to create these looks and what products to use.

We then attached our manikin heads to the chair of the arm and began practising these new styles.

To create a 4 part bun, there are several steps to create this flawlessly without using a bun ring.
First of all, you take the hair and comb it into a ponytail on the crown of the head.

Next, you take the front piece of the ponytail and begin backcombing it so it becomes quite thick and easier to create a bun like shape.

You then take a hair grip and slide it in just by the bobble so the hair is in a circle effect.

Next, repeat this step four times, so there are four circles of hair on the head in a sort of flower shape.
This is what your model's hair should look like after you have backcombed and gripped all four parts of the hair.

The next stage is to take one of thesr hair clips and 'use it like a small chopstick' as our tutor told us, to fix the gaps between the parts of the hair.

To do this, you put the clip in the hair and pull the pieces until there are no gaps left and your model's hair looks like this.

And this is my end result. I am quite pleased with how it turned out considering I had never tried this before, I still need a lot of practise and to work on some touch ups. I didn't think it was too hard to create but it wasn't easy either but overall i'm happy with my finished style.

Overall, I really enjoyed my first practical hair lesson. I found it really fun and also interestong to learn how to create some new and different styles. I can't wait to keep practising and to learn more about hair design.
