My final evaluation of the project

I really enjoyed this first project and I feel that I learnt a lot and became more confident. I liked learning how to use many new techniques and materials. My favourite thing to learn was the rik rakking as I found it very interesting and fun and I also liked the finished look. The research was one thing I enjoyed about this unit and I feel I now know a lot more about fashion and hair design.

I did feel that my assessment did't go as good as I had hoped. Me and my partner didn't have good communication during our time working together. Neither of us gave the other their hair designs until quite late and I was off for a few lessons due to illness and health appointments. I feel that because of this lack of communication that my assessment did go quite badly and I never achieved what I had hoped. Next time I would make sure that me and my partner both have good communication between each other. I think I did good on my research and need to work more on my practicals.

Evaluation - as the stylist

This was my creation of my partner's hair design.

My partner created this design consisting of two backcombed pieces that look like a heart shape at the front of her head and then for the rest of the hair to be curled underneath. For the heart shape at the front, she said to back comb it but this did not create the exact shape she wanted from her hair chart, I think a padding piece would have created this better. The look was meant to be messy looking and not neat but I wasn't too sure on what parts of it she meant and which parts I should clip into place properly and what parts to leave slightly messy. Although the hairstyle was quite simple, it took a long time to create as Phoebe's hair was quite thin and I had to backcomb it for a while to get a strong structure to the hair and I used a lot of hair grips and hairspray.

I used my pintail comb at the start to section the hair off perfectly into two equal parts and then also splitting the front section into two equal parts. For the bottom of the hair, I used a curling wand and held it horizontally and held it in the hair for 10 seconds to make the end turn in and curl.

I don't know how I feel about my final work as I feel I could have done a bit better, although my partner wanted the hair to look a bit messy I think there are some little pieces that I could have fixed to make it even better. I feel like me and my partner didn't really communicate well for the assessments, I practised the hair design on the Katie head prior to the assessment but not on my actual partner due to me being off ill for a while.

This was my partner's hair design, she had not sent me this prior to the assessment and she didn't have her charts with her for the lesson we were meant to bring them in and she briefly explained what she wanted her design to look like. Based on the brief information she told me, I went and practised on my Katie head, a while later she sent me an image of her design she had practised on her Katie head with no information about it or how she created the design. I seen the hair chart for the first time on the assessment. For her design, she wanted the ends of her hair pinning up and because of a miscommunication I thought she wanted it to be curled underneath. I don't feel like me and my partner had enough communication throughout this assessment but I did my best and tried to get the design as good as I could get.

Evaluation - as the designer

This is my final design that I came up with. Out of all three of the designs that were potential for my final idea, this was my favourite one. Buns were popular during the Elizabethan era but double buns are very modern so I like that i'm still sticking to the Elizabethan style but added a contemporary twist. I also decided to add a plait on the top of the head as this was an Elizabethan style as well.

These were the images of my final design that my partner created on me. I think she did an alright job of bringing my hair chart to life. The buns were on the crown of the head which is exactly where I  wanted them, the braid on the top of my head didn't have a straight line in the sectioning. For the pieces at the side of the head I said for loose hair to be hanging at the side which she did but each side didn't match and they looked wonky, the hair wasn't straight either the hairline was wonky. I wanted all the hair typing up at the back but she left some loose pieces hanging down.

I don't think me and my partner communicated that well together. She practised on my hair once and said she was happy with it and didn't need to practise again.

Elizabethan hair accessories

  • Elizabeth always loved to wear accessories in her hair, even from a young Princess she always wore crowns or jewels or had some other form of accessory in her hair. In the first image, she is only a young girl but she is wearing a very detailed and jewelled crown on top of her head. The second image shows the Queen wearing a crown that looks like it is made completely out of pearls and the last image shows her wearing pearls all over her hair and one large pearl hanging down at the top of her forehead.

    Hair task!!

    • (Ethnic Hairstyles, no date)

We got given a task to complete in class today. We had to either create a bridal hairstyle on our Katie head or a hairstyle for a catwalk show. I choose the catwalk show hairstyle as I prefer big, funky hair rather than neat hair tied back or with braids and plaits. After I decide to pick the catwalk hairstyle, I started researching some different hairstyles from past catwalks that inspired me. I came across this image and it really caught my eye, I like the different details in her hair with the twisty plaits at the top and the crimping at the bottom of her hair and I also like the way the model has a middle parting and the stylists have brushed the crimping in her hair to make it look frizzy.

    • (glamourista.nl et al., 2014)
This was the second image that I found inspiring. I like the curls at the front of her hair and then the messy bun at the top of her head. The stylists have added some accessories to her hair like little clips. I liked this idea the best and decided to use it as inspiration for the task.

This was my design that I created. I decided to take some inspiration from the second image and put some curls at the front of the hair. I used a curling wand and by placing the hair in sections by using a pintail comb, placed it horizontally and created 9 curls at the front of the head. The Katie head's hair was too short to put it in a ponytail or create a stylish bun so I just created a basic bun on the crown of the head.

I'm happy with this design I came out with, I really like how the curls came out and they remind me of a bunch of roses and Queen Elizabeth loved flowers and having some kind of symbolism in her clothes or hair so this style for a contemporary Elizabethan look would work well I think. I don't think I need to improve on anything and I didn't come across any obstacles whilst doing this design.

    Rik Rakking - Practical

Rik Rakking is a new form of hairstyle that has become popular in the fashion world. I really like this hairstyle and can see why it's so well liked.

To create this hairstyle, you take a small section of hair, like shown below, and take a pin clip and place the hair inside the clip. The next step is to weave the hair through the clip by wrapping it in and out of each side.

You then take a hair grip and place it over the end to stop the hair from falling out and then, take a pair of heated straighteners (consult with your model about their hair to know which heat temperature to use) and place it over the hair for around 10 seconds.

After you have heated the hair, you can take the clip off the end of your hair and use your finger to slide the hair off the clip and the hair should end up looking like this below on the right.

This image below on the left shows a few of the rik rak curls and the image on the right is what the back of the hair looked like. i made a massive bun because the hair was really thick from the crimping and I took a piece of hair and wrapped it round to create a big bun just under the crown of the head. I also added a padding to the front of the hair to give it volume and make it look very Elizabethan.

I then took my curls and placed them over the top of the padding to create this look.

I really like my final look as I think it looks very Elizabethan and like something the Queen would have had her hair like. I really enjoyed creating this look and I like the look of the rik raks. I didn't find any problems whilst creating this and I would like to do something similar again.

    Padding the hair - Practical

Elizabethans were known for having quite large, padded hair. After Queen Elizabeth I took reign, women's hair started to change. She enjoyed hair styles such as high hair, braids and plaits and sometimes buns.

To start off padding the hair, I crimped it all first to give extra volume to the hair. I sectioned off the hair by using my pintail comb and creating neat, small sections and crimped the hair one section at a time until the full head looked like this.

I then brushed the whole head and brush the crimping out so the hair is really big and thick. The bigger the hair, the bigger your finished padded hair will look.

I then sectioned the hair into two pieces and clipped it apart. After that, I sectioned off a section at the front of the head that would be used for the front padding and then clipped away the hair at the back.

After I had all my sections, I took the very front section and split it into two parts, one on the right side and one on the left side.

The hair at the back should be clipped back and the left section at the front too. Take the right side of the front section and take your padding and place the padding on the root of the hair and wrap the hair back so it covers the padding, you can then clip this into place with a hair grip.

You should do the same to both side and you can use a hair grip to fix any parts of the hair that need fixing or covering up until both sides of the hair are equal and look the same.

And this is what your finished result should look like. I didn't find this very hard to create and I enjoyed doing it, I did have a little trouble covering some of the hair wrapped around the padding slightly and need to work on that for next time but overall I am happy with how this turned out for my first time doing it.
