Buns and Plaits - Practical

Today in class we had to create a hairstyle that included a bun and also a plait in it. I decided to plait the front of the hair in a fish plait style and have it curving round on the crown of the head.

I found the plait quite easy to create. I tilted the head sideways slightly and got a neat piece of hair starting at the front and split it into two equal parts which I then used to create a fish plait. The piece of hair was fairly long so I continued plaiting until the end, which I then curved round the head and clipped with a hair grip.

A close up of the fish plait.

For the rest of the hair, I placed it into a small neat bun near the bottom of the head. I thought because the plait was quite detailed that I would go for a more simpler bun so I created this by twisting the hair until it formed a bun shape and then clipped it into place.

The fish plait was quite common during the Elizabethan era, many woman and children with long hair would have it plaited back or would have a plait similar to this at the front of the head and a bun at the back.

I think this style looks quite classy and I am really happy with how the design turned out. I think the style would look good with some accessories added to it such as ribbons and pearls to make it look more Elizabethan.

I didn't find I had any complications during creating this hair style as the bun was quite simple and I am quite confident with creating fish plaits. The only thing I need to fix is that you can see the clip holding the bun in place so I would need to make sure that is hidden next time but apart from that I am pleased with this.
